Judgement

SCREENING OF DOCUMENTS AND FOOTAGE

  • 1.The Nominating Committee is formed within the Organizing Committee. They will decide who is eligible to participate in the first preliminary round based upon their screening of the documents and footage materials submitted by the applicants.
  • 2.Each applicant will be notified of the results either via a letter or email by August 15, 2018.
  • 3.Min-On will not officially announce the details of the initial screening.

JUDGING GUIDELINES

  • 1.The competition is divided into three parts: the first, second preliminary rounds and the finals.
  • 2.The schedule of the competition is outlined in the next section, “Dates, Venues and Orchestras.”
  • 3.All three parts of the competition will be open to the public (admission concerts).

JUDGING PROCEDURES FOR REQUIRED PIECES AND COMPOSITIONS OF CHOICE

First Preliminary Round (Orchestra Conducting)

Mendelssohn: Overture from “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage” Op. 27 (Breitkopf & Hartel edition)
Compositions of Choice

The piece to be conducted will be chosen by the Organizing Committee from the three compositions of choice submitted at the time of application by the contestants while complying with the conditions that, “These pieces must be symphonic or orchestral music with no more than three players for each wind instrument and six players for percussion (including timpani), and not contain instrumental solo, a vocal solo, or a chorus.”

Notes on the Composition:
  • Up to one saxophone is acceptable.One each of piano, celesta and organ as well as up to two players on each of these instruments is accepted.Harpsichord is not accepted.Up to two harps are accepted.

Contestants will be informed which composition(s) of choice to conduct after the announcement of the results of the second preliminary round.

Order of Appearance

The order of appearance for the first, second preliminary rounds and the finals will be decided by lots drawn by each contestant.

PARTICIPATION FEE

The candidates selected for the first preliminary round based on their documents and footages are requested to pay the participation fee at the time of registration. The participation fee is 20,000 yen.
(It must be paid with cash in Japanese yen.)

REGISTRATION

FIRST PRELIMINARY ROUND

All contestants participating in the first preliminary round must assemble at the time and place indicated below to complete the registration procedures.

Date : Sunday, October 7, 2018
Time : 3:00 p.m.
Place: Min-On Culture Center (1st Floor lobby) in Tokyo
  • a.Passages for the required piece to be conducted in the first preliminary round will be announced.
  • b.The competition schedule and the order of appearance will be determined by lottery and announced.
  • c.Contestants must pay the participation fee.
  • d.Contestants from overseas will receive a subsidy to cover the cost of international airfare.
SECOND PRELIMINARY ROUND

Contestants who will participate in the second preliminary round must assemble at the time and place indicated below to complete the necessary procedures.

Date: Tuesday, October 9, 2018
Time: Right after the announcement of the result of the first preliminary round
Place: Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall
  • a.Passages for the required piece to be conducted in the second preliminary round will be announced.
  • b.The competition schedule and the order of appearance will be determined by lots drawn by each contestant.
FINALS

Contestants who will participate in the finals must assemble at the time and place indicated below to complete the necessary procedures.

Date: Thursday, October 11, 2018
Time: Right after the announcement of the result of the second preliminary round
Place: Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall
  • a.Passages for the Compositions of Choice to be conducted in the finals will be announced.
  • b.Special notes on the rehearsal for the finals will be announced, and the order of appearance will be determined by lots drawn by each contestant.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS

  • ・The results of the first preliminary round will be posted in the competition hall following the competition on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.
  • ・The results of the second preliminary round will be posted in the competition hall following the competition on Thursday, October 11, 2018.
  • ・The results of the finals will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony following the finals on Sunday, October 14, 2018.
